I know it’s easier. I know you already have the footage. I know you’re just trying to keep the content flowing.
And yes, I might be a bit dramatic here, BUT PLEASE, JUST STOP.
If you’re posting landscape (horizontal) videos to Instagram Reels, you are not helping your brand. You are actively damaging your reach, your engagement, and all the progress you may have worked hard to build.
Instagram Reels are one of the best tools for growing your business online, but only if you use them properly. They are designed for vertical content that fills the entire screen. Anything else looks out of place and instantly loses impact.
What’s the Problem with Landscape?
Instagram Reels are meant to be viewed vertically. The platform is built for a 9:16 ratio, which means your content should take up the full screen on a phone.
When you post a landscape video, it:
- Appears with black bars at the top and bottom,
- Shrinks to a narrow rectangle,
- Looks like it was made for another platform entirely.
Even if your message is strong, the formatting undermines it. Think of it like giving someone a beautifully written letter printed in font size 6 on a crumpled napkin. The content might be great, but the delivery ruins it.
Silent Videos? Even Worse
Now let’s take that same poorly formatted video and remove the sound.
No captions, no music, no voiceover. Just a silent rectangle sitting awkwardly in the middle of the screen.
Most users watch Reels with sound on. Many rely on captions to follow along. Without either, your video is doing nothing to stop the scroll.
One Bad Reel Can Wreck Your Momentum
This is the part many businesses overlook. A badly formatted post doesn’t just underperform on its own, it can also affect how your future posts perform.
Instagram’s algorithm looks at how your audience interacts with your content. If users immediately scroll past a video because it is hard to watch or looks unprofessional, the algorithm takes that as a sign that your content is not engaging.
As a result, it becomes less likely to show your next posts to people, even if those posts are perfectly formatted.
In short, one poor video can undo weeks or months of hard work.
What To Do Instead
If you are going to create content for Reels, do it properly:
- Film vertically using your phone’s native orientation,
- Use music, voiceovers or captions to add clarity and engagement,
- Edit your video using tools like CapCut, Canva or InShot if you need to reformat older footage,
- Grab attention within the first two seconds using bold text, movement or a clear message.
If you have great landscape content, it still has value. Just use it where it makes more sense:
- YouTube,
- Your website,
- Instagram Stories,
- Or edited into Reels with background blur and supporting text.
Final Word
Posting landscape videos to Reels might seem like a small detail, but it makes a big difference. It affects how your content is viewed, how your audience responds, and how the algorithm treats your account.
I know it’s tempting to take shortcuts. I know it feels like it should not matter that much. But it does.
If you are going to use Reels as a marketing tool, respect the format and make your content work for you, not against you.
And if you are feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to begin, I am here to help you make the most of it.
